Safe Harbor -- A Young Adults
Discussion Group By Pastor Lonnie Honeycutt -- Deeper Life Fellowship When: Every Thursday night
Time:
6:30 PM until 8:30 PM (this is pretty flexible but we WILL respect any
limits set by your parent or guardian)
What:
Discussion of just about anything that pops up with an emphasis on problem
solving for situations in life.
Where:
Deeper Life Fellowship Eastern Shore (www.deeperlifeeast.com)
Who:
Anyone 16 years to 21 years (if you're under 16 and want to be a part
of this, let me know and I'll consider it case by case).
The discussion group is being
called 'Safe Harbor'
because that's what it is, a safe place for anyone who comes.
I intend this to be a no-holds
barred discussion of whatever the group wants to talk about but there will
be some rules...
1) We're all to be respectful
of one another. This doesn't mean that we can't disagree but that
we'll do so without resorting to put-downs, aggressive behavior, or making
the person we're in disagreement with feel bad.
2) Limit the profanity.
I know that some of us have a harder time with that than others but
because we're going to have many different people from different
backgrounds, profane language shouldn't be used regularly. Of
course, if anyone slips and utters highly inflammatory 19 syllable cuss
words we'll forgive them (heck we might even give them and award if there
is an actual 19 syllable curse).
3) No one can show-up naked
(as per our 'Dress Code' -- see the
website for more details).
4) No alcohol, drugs, weapons
of any type, etc.
5) If you show up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, appropriate physical boundaries are expected (i.e., no kissing, groping, etc.). If you have a question about what is acceptable, just ask.
Basically, this is common
sense stuff based on the Golden Rule (Treat others like you'd want to be
treated).
One more thing...
This isn't going to be a
simple (if there is such a thing) Christian question and answer session.
It can be that if we so choose to have it be but I'm not planning on it.
Will there be philosophical discussions based on our particular world
views and belief systems? Absolutely. However, no one should
feel intimidated by the fact that we're having this in a church building
(a decidedly non-traditional church building but a church nonetheless).
Of course, I'm going to give my opinion based on my experience and
understanding as a conservative, evangelical, Christian. If anyone
wants to disagree with my view then we can discuss it -- the same goes for
me being able to disagree with others.
So, as an example, what is
going to be open for discussion:
Just
in case no one can think of something to discuss I'll come up with
something (and have something ready). It's no fun when we sit around
twiddling our thumbs.
What To Bring
Bring a beverage and something
to share that we can snack on (chips, dip, cake, candy, etc.). If
you can't afford any of this come anyway and bring your mouth (I'm sure we
can find something you'll like).
An open mind, a smile,
and a willingness to share.
Musical Instruments
I know we have people out
there (including me) who like to play instruments -- from guitars and
drums to keyboards and hand bells and who knows what else.
So, if you'd like to bring your favorite instrument and have a 'jam
session' with other musicians -- Bring 'em On!
We've got a stage and a sound
system, and, if you get too loud in the main sanctuary, we've got plenty
of other rooms to go in -- plus we have an awesome pool table for anyone
who likes billiards.
